Contrada Neighborhood Walk
Siena is the only city in Italy which has the CONTRADAs - Neighborhoods. There are 17 in all. During our tour you will get to know about the history of the the contrada - linked to the World-famous PALIO horse race which takes place twice a year; on the 2nd of July and on the 16th of August. Only in Siena - and "only" since the past 7 hundred years.
We will walk through a few Contradas, and visit from the inside one of the museums of the Contrada.
If you are visiting Siena the day before the 2nd of July or the 16th of August, you can attend the trial run of the famous horse race (at an additional cost of 10 euro per person) either in the morning at 9 am or in the evening at 7 pm.
The long tradition of the Palio leads to a strong identification of the citizens of Siena with their personal contrada. Understanding the dynamics of the contrade you'll understand much of the medieval and modern Siena.
