Crete Senesi & Pienza
This tour
will go through the famous Crete
Senesi famous, an area South of
Siena famous for its
extraordinary beauty.
We start by going to Buonconvento (elected one of the 100 most beautiful Italian villages) for morning cappuccino and a stroll around the village. Then we drive to the Abbazia of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, where we will stop and have a walk around the grounds of this Abbey that dates back to 1319.
Along the
way we will stop to take
pictures of the Crete Senesi, a
characteristic country side
unique to this part of Tuscany.
San Giovanni d'Asso
is a small hilltop town, famous
in the area for its quality of
truffles. How about a
truffle lunch in
one of the local trattoria's?
If truffles isn't your thing, lunch could be in Bagno Vignoni, a tiny little town where there are ancient baths and you could stick your feet into the luke-warm water that flows out of the ground. Third lunch option would be in a cheese farm - the crete senesi hosts a large number of small sheep farms where some of the most famous pecorino cheeses are made. Then the trip goes on to Pienza in the midst of the Val d'Orcia valley (Unesco protected since 2004) and a renaissance town planned by Pope Pio II in the 14-hundreds and who was of a Sienese family. The town is extremely picturesque and idyllic in it's whole layout and is full of small artisanal shops and cafes. Spend some time strolling, taking pictures and shopping before heading back towards Siena.
